It provides an interesting side detour from the <a title=\"Via Chiantigiana\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chianti-italy.com\/chiantigiana.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #3399ff;\"><strong>Via Chiantigiana<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, the motoring route from Florence to Sienna. The famous <a title=\"Battle of Montaperti\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sienna-italy.com\/battleofmontaperti.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3399ff;\">Battle of Montaperti<\/span><\/strong><\/a> during which the Siennese inflicted a humiliating defeat upon Florence was fought nearby on 4 September, 1260.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_167\" style=\"width: 424px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greve-in-chianti.com\/tuscany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/villa_chigi_saracini.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-167\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-167\" title=\"Villa Chigi Saracini\" alt=\"Villa Chigi Saracini\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greve-in-chianti.com\/tuscany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/villa_chigi_saracini-414x300.jpg\" width=\"414\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greve-in-chianti.com\/tuscany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/villa_chigi_saracini-414x300.jpg 414w, https:\/\/www.greve-in-chianti.com\/tuscany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/villa_chigi_saracini-150x108.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.greve-in-chianti.com\/tuscany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/villa_chigi_saracini.jpg 770w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 414px) 100vw, 414px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-167\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Villa Chigi Saracini<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <strong>Vicolo dell&#8217;Arco<\/strong> is a famous covered lane in the old town of Castelnuovo Berardenga , consisting of steep stone stairs leading downwards from a tympanum arch decorated with a beautiful bas-relief. Nearby is the <strong>Church of San Giusto and Clemente<\/strong>, built during the 19 C and housing a Renaissance &#8216;Madonna with Child&#8217; by a Siennese artist. The <strong>Church of the Madonna del Patrocinio<\/strong>, also nearby, houses a 14 C painted and glazed terracotta &#8216;Madonna&#8217; that was found in the ruins of the castle that existed where the Vicolo dell&#8217;Arco is today.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Villa Chigi Saraceni\" href=\"https:\/\/www.castelnuovo-berardenga.com\/chigi-saracini_eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #3399ff;\"><strong>Villa Chigi Saracini<\/strong><\/span><\/a> was built in the 19 C and is surrounded by a beautiful Italian Renaissance garden and a &#8216;<em>giardino all&#8217;inglese<\/em>&#8216;. The villa was commissioned by the Count Guido Saracini, founder of the famous Chigiana Musical Academy in Sienna.<\/p>\n<p>While the town of Castelnuovo Berardenga itself is well worth strolling around, the main interest of the area are the beautiful surroundings with their castles and fortresses, villas and churches. Among them are the village of <a title=\"San Gusm\u00e8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.castelnuovo-berardenga.com\/san_gusme_eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3399ff;\">San Gusm\u00e8<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, the <a title=\"Certosa di Pontignano\" href=\"https:\/\/www.castelnuovo-berardenga.com\/certosa_di_pontignano_eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #3399ff;\"><strong>Certosa of Pontignano<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, the <a title=\"Castello di Montalto\" href=\"https:\/\/www.castelnuovo-berardenga.com\/castello_di_montalto_eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #3399ff;\"><strong>Castle of Montalto<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and <a title=\"Villa Acerno\" href=\"https:\/\/www.castelnuovo-berardenga.com\/villa_arceno.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #3399ff;\"><strong>Villa Acerno<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The municipality of\u00a0Castelnuovo Berardenga\u00a0 runs a programme of tours known as &#8220;<a title=\"Sunday in Chianti\" href=\"https:\/\/www.castelnuovo-berardenga.com\/sunday_in_chianti.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #3399ff;\"><strong>Domenica in Chianti<\/strong><\/span><\/a>&#8221; on most Sundays. These inexpensive excursions visit places that are otherwise not open to the public and where the owners describe their property or activity.
