Podere Quattro Venti

Podere "Quattro Venti" is located in the Chianti hills above Greve in Chianti, 25 km from Florence. (Click here for a map).

The Podere extends over six hectares, facing north-east. There is an olive grove on two hectares. The olive trees are many years old but still producing, even though some were severely damaged by frost and freezing temperatures during the winter of 1985. However, the micro-climate enjoyed in this particular area helps control any parasites which might damage the trees. In fact, very little or no intervention is needed to obtain a good and healthy crop. We could say that this is a biological olive grove; the only treatment given to the trees is the addition to the soil of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The grove comprises 500 trees - 250 per hectare. Two hundred trees are young and are not yet producing. Traditional local varieties are cultivated: Leccino (very resistant to cold temperatures), Moraiolo, Frantoio and Pendolino. This extravirgin olive oil you are enjoying comes from a beautiful place and is produced by the skill of Miss Giuseppina Morico.

Olive harvest

Olives of all colours are combined in the harvest.

It is the absence of heat during extraction that preserves the wonderful flavour that characterises "extra-virgin" olive oil. The oil should be consumed as fresh as possible. Unlike wine, it does not improve with age.
