Montefioralle is one of the best preserved castellated villages in Tuscany. Originally there were two courses of walls. These walls now have houses built into them, opening onto the circular road between the walls. Sometimes the inhabitants bring small cars onto this road but in general there is no traffic at all within Montefioralle. Three or four small lanes and passageways pass through the walls, and there is a small piazza where the residents and visitors sit under the trees. There is a children's playground below the walls. Montefioralle has an excellent restaurant, Taverna del Guerrino, and there are several good restaurants within walking distance in Greve in Chianti. Walking down to Greve, 1.5 km away, is easy but the walk back up is fairly stiff. Nevertheless, it can readily be done and supplies are available in the Coop supermarket in Greve. You are one hour from Florence by car or the comfortable SITA bus. Siena is a one hour drive away along the picturesque Chiantigiana road (SS 222), and Castellina, Fiesole, Gaiole in Chianti, Radda in Chianti, Arezzo, Montalcino, Montepulciano and Pienza are all an easy drive away.
From Florence (also Pisa and Bologna) there are several options, the easiest being to take the SS 222 (La Chiantigiana) through Grassina and Strada to Greve. As you approach the outskirts of Greve, take the right-hand turn to Montefioralle at the tourist information office.
You can also take the Florence to Siena motorway and exit at San Donato. Follow the poorly sign-posted route past Badia a Passignano to Montefioralle, following the signs for Greve. This route can also be used if you are coming from Siena.
From Panzano, follow the road signposted Mercatale but turn to the right at the sign for Montefioralle and Greve.
