A unique locale for your vacation in Tuscany!
Looking for a place to stay in Tuscany that's different from everything else? Rent an entire restored monastery with five bedrooms sleeping up to 10 persons. This wonderful former canonica is provided with two modern bathrooms, a modern kitchen with stove, refrigerator and dishwasher. An informal dining area forms part of the living room with its huge walk-in fireplace, and there is a formal dining room that seats 10 or more. The Canonica itself dates back centuries and the entire structure is furnished and decorated with antiques.
The Canonica di Greve is situated on the foothills of Monte San Michele, a national park, within easy reach, as its name suggests, of Greve in Chianti, the market town of the Chianti Classico wine territory.
The Cloister
The courtyard (cortile) of our Canonica was once the garth of its cloister and is strikingly human in scale. It will be the focal point of your stay. The ground floor rooms and loggias all open onto this wonderful space which is enclosed on all sides by the monastery and church, and overlooked on two sides by the loggias of the first floor. The cortile is paved in huge blocks of stone with grass springing up between them and, besides a water cistern well-head, it contains a marble bas-reliefed fountain and numerous busts and other ancient objects. Vines and geraniums complete the picture. Here you can dine, talk, read, sunbathe and relax in complete privacy and tranquility.

Some History
The Canonica was constructed in the mid-9th century on the ruins of a Roman fortress, and archaeological evidence suggests that the original Roman fortress was itself built on the foundations of an Etruscan outpost. The Canonica was an active Roman Catholic monastery until the middle of the 20th century. With the movement away from traditional agrarian society, the monastery was abandoned and fell into disrepair. Dino Levi, at his retirement the foremost antique dealer in Italy, purchased the canonica in the 1960’s and began the slow process of restoration. This architectural treasure now belongs to his descendants who are continuing the family tradition by restoring the monastic church.
